Aboriginal Family Law Services

Aboriginal Legal Advice and Support

Provides free legal and community support services for Aboriginal families and individuals in Western Australia.
This includes:
  • Legal advocacy
  • Casework
  • Court support and representation in matters related to family violence and sexual assault.

They cannot act for perpetrators of violence. The legal matters they assist with include Violence Restraining Orders (VRO’s), criminal injuries compensation, and family law such as child recovery orders and parenting plans.

Aboriginal Legal Advice and Support

Provides legal representation and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Western Australia.
The service provides information, support and referrals for people affected by family and domestic violence, including risk assessment, safety planning, Violence Restraining Order (VRO) applications and court support.

Support Service

Victim Support Service: information on police investigations and court proceedings, help to write victim impact statements and to understand rights within the criminal justice system; court, counselling and restraining order support; information, referral and help with enquiries about criminal injuries compensation claims.
Child Witness Service: individual practical and emotional preparation and support to each child, referrals to appropriate agencies, support and assistance from the time charges are laid until matters before the court are finalised, facilitation in the preparation of victim impact statements.

Legal Advice

FASS provide support and legal help if you are affected by domestic and family violence and have a family law issue.
They can help you if you have experienced domestic and family violence or someone says you have used violence.
The Family Advocacy and Support Service lawyers can assist by:
  • Arrangements for children
  • Domestic Violence Orders (known as Family Violence Restraining Orders or FVROs)
  • Property after separation
  • Divorce
  • Child Support
  • Child protection
  • Applying for legal aid
  • Some urgent court matters
The Family Advocacy and Support Service support worker can assist by:
  • Help you plan for your safety
  • Talk to the Family Courts about your safety at court
  • Give you information and support during your family law case
  • Help with practical problems like Centrelink and housing
  • Advocate for you with services like police
  • Connect you with men’s behaviour change programs or other services
